Scarlet Witch Tagged As Mature - Update

Thu May 8, 2008, 5:20 AM
Hey there,

I'd like to thank each and everyone of you who has commented. Thank you for sharing your views and your past experiences. It's good to know I'm not the only one and I greatly appreciate you all taking the time to share or help out. It's important that we have expressed our thoughts on things like this. I strongly feel this kind of thing should not come to pass especially in this day and age and especially not on a place like deviantart.

As for what's going on; Just asked Help-desk about this situation. Hopefully it's all a misunderstanding and things will get resolved for good this time. I'll be sure to keep you updated. Thanks again.

Hey everyone,

I received a note saying that the Scarlet Witch sketch I shared a few days ago was reported by someone as MATURE CONTENT and was reviewed by the DA staff. The situation was RESOLVED when the deviation was tagged mature!

I am at a loss for words right now. But I'll try my best.

Firstly it's best if I make an assessment of the situation from my point of view; The piece shows a very famous Marvel Comics character IN FULL COSTUME. There is NO NUDITY involved. The pose was originally taken off of a Dave Stevens' DNAgents comic book cover as it was specifically requested by the customer. The original cover itself depicts a woman with less clothing on her and which is also in colour showing her skin (Scarlet Witch has tights over her legs and chest area). I also think it should be noted that the original book is NOT for mature readers and was displayed on store shelves for everyone to see. The pose can be considered sexy but in my personal opinion not offensive at all especially considering the variety of stuff present here on DA and what we see in our daily lives.

So why is this piece tagged as mature content?

Sure, some people may consider this kind of "pin-up" work to be distasteful and I am ok with that. This, however, DOESN'T make this piece eligible for mature content in my opinion. I'm trying to think of this as universally as possible and putting into consideration the modern world we live in. I mean, who hasn't seen a huge billboard advertisement with a sexy woman in a bikini or something that's a thousand times sexier than my humble effort here? That's what I don't understand. This piece was considered to be mature stuff and apparently immediate action was taken by none other than the DA staff.

I'd like to consider what really happened was someone thought the piece was explicit for their views and reported it. Probably moved on never to look back either. Then maybe the DA staff automatically reviewed and tagged it. I can't say of course and this still doesn't make what happened right to me.

I can't comprehend the factors that make this piece mature! Is it because the pose is hinting to something explicit? Is she too scantily clad? Is there nudity? What is going on? Maybe I should cover her up with some sheets and a turban. That's maybe what could resolve this once and for all. Or maybe people should remove the sheets from their eyes.

To see and make your own judgment, here is the deviation; [link]

I guess that's enough of my ranting here.

Oh! I have to say; I don't have anything against a deviation being tagged as mature content. I in fact support it as long as it's used right.

Yeah, I wouldn't consider that mature content at all.

It's hardly 'mature' content in the least. Sexy as hell, yes. Mature? She's more dressed than many billboards and magazine advertisements for Victoria's Secret.
